Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) fruit extract ameliorates methotrexate‐induced reproductive toxicity in male rats

Objective: Methotrexate (MTX) is a drug commonly used for the treatment of malign neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. Antioxidant anti-inflammatory effects bitter melon (BM) were reported. The aim this study was to examine BM fruit extract on MTX-induced testicular epididymal damage. Materials Methods: Sprague Dawley male rats divided into three groups (n=8) as control, MTX MTX+BM. A single dose (20 mg/kg) injected intraperitoneally MTX+BM groups. (600 applied group orally 5 days. Testes examined general histopathology, proliferating apoptotic cells. epididymis samples evaluation sperm morphology. Oxidative markers analysed biochemically. Results: Increased abnormal spermatozoa, degenerated seminiferous tubules with increased cells decreased proliferative observed in group. TNF-α, IL-1β, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine caspase-3 levels increased, superoxide dismutase catalase both testis samples. All these histological biochemical parameters ameliorated Conclusion: causes damage by decreasing spermatogenic increasing apoptosis through oxidative stress inflammation. improves its possible anti-oxidant effects.
